How your hair's texture relates to you
Texture is everywhere this season-it's the source of inspiration for many of the makeup and male and female clothing lines this fall. It's even inspired us to make it the theme for this month's issue! So let's talk about hair texture and how it relates to you. There are basically 3 different texture types, which are based on the diameter or width of the hair strand-fine, medium and course. Here are the characteristics of each hair type and how it affects your styling:
FINE HAIR
-is very thin in diameter
-very light in weight
-subject to the treaded flyaways
Styling Tip:
As a result, this type of hair can't hold a curl very easily but it needs a little volume, so try spicing it up with a little fringe to your ends or bangs, or a soft waviness to your hair will do wonders. If you have the face for it, try having it short where you can put some styling product to mess it up a little and add some texture.
Hair Care Tip:
You need some add some weight and thickness to your hair, so go with shampoos and conditioners that have proteins in it, they will labelled as shampoos that will add volume to your hair.
MEDIUM HAIR
-most common hair type, diameter is not to thick or thin
-hair has good weight so it's easy to manage
-not subject to flyaways, can hold a style well
Styling Tip:
You lucky person! You're one of those people who can hold any style you choose, so whatever hits your fancy you can do.
Hair Care Tip:
Since your hair is pretty manageable, you just need a shampoo and conditioner for "normal" hair types.
COARSE HAIR
-hair is thick in diameter
-very heavy in weight
-can appear weighted down in nature or worse, prone to frizz, curling
Styling Tip:
Your hair tends to be thick in nature, so it would be good for you to lift some of that weight. Try a multi layered hair cut (to break up some of the weight and make it easier to manage), and lay off the blow drying and straightening since this will damage your hair more, and cause more split ends.
Hair Care Tip:
Since you're carrying enough weight in your hair as it is, go with a shampoo and conditioner that won't leave a residue, since it will weigh your hair down more. It's best not to wash your hair every day, since your natural oils help to smooth your hair down. Your formulation of shampoo should be light in nature ( a gel or organic), and make sure to trim your hair regularly (to avoid split ends which you are prone to).
