Bet You Didn't Know Your Cellphone Can Do That!!

I got this really interesting email from a friend of mine in the UK that had all these great little facts about cellphones and how they can save your life.  After some research, we found that some of the facts were true and some were not.  We thought we'll go over some cell phone myths and let you know what's true and what's not.

It Can Unlock Your Car

False. It was believed that a car with a remote keyless entry can be opened by holding your cell phone near the lock of the car and having someone on the other end hit the unlock button.  Unfortunately, not true.  These remote systems use radio waves (and proximity), so they are different signals and frequencies that what are used by cell phones.

It Has Hidden Battery Power

False.  This was based off an option available on some brands of phone, where you can key in the code

*3370#

which will give you 30% more talk time at the expense of sound quality.  This is in fact the opposite to what this code does.  It will give better sound quality at the expense of more battery!

Sorry, I've been caught on this situation too many times to count-wish there was some code I could dial!

It Can Disable Itself If It's Stolen

True. If some jackass has stolen your phone, there's a way you can piss them off-disable your phone so it's useless and won't be of any value.  To be able to do this, key in

* # 0 6 #

this will pop up a 15 digit code that is unique to your phone (which is also printed underneath your battery).  Keep this info somewhere safe. When your phone's stolen call your provider, give them the code and (depending on your provider) they will block the handset or at least invalidate the phone, even if a new SIM card has been put in.

There is an Emergency Number Worldwide

True.  This fact kind of freaked me out-reminds me of The Simpson's episode where Homer finds out the real number to call in an emergency is 9-1-2, you know the one where he's the chosen one in the Stonecutters or something, sorry I digress.  Apparently the Emergency Number worldwide for a cell phone is

112

So if your in an area out of your coverage or network and there is an emergency, dial this number and it will search the existing network and get you the emergency number.  This is true even if your keypad is locked or there is no SIM card in your phone-pretty cool!  However, for our American readers-your still better off dialing 911.  In some areas of the US, you can dial #77 and it will connect to the local highway patrol, but this is not true for all the US, so 911 is still a better choice.

It Causes Cancer

Not sure. There are conflicting studies on this, but like everything in life, all the studies agreed that  moderation is key.   So if your one of those people where a cell phone has become another facial appendage, please reconsider!

It Causes Lower Sperm Counts

True but more studies need to be done!   There have been several studies that have linked the amount of cell phone use to lower sperm counts, so the more you are on it, the lower and less mobile your sperm is.  This has been especially true for men who keep their cells in their pockets.  So please,  protect yourself and your little guys from damage and get off the phone!
