| Just What Is It About Paris....
Every time I travel to another city, I can't help compare but to compare it to Paris (and New York). I was trying to figure out why Paris has gotten so stuck under my skin and why I love to go back time and time again. I've come up with some of my favorite things about Paris and hopefully one will ring true with you.
1) The Food and Wine
I'm sure you've heard this before, but the average table wine and restaurant are just delicious! Like any city, you have your fair share of bad eateries, but that just isn't typically the way. A key way to avoid this, is look at where the locals are eating and go there. If the restaurants is packed, they are busy for a reason. The French know good food, and if it's not good, they aren't going to eat there, so be cautioned when it's too easy to get a seat, or they are having to use a gimmick to get you into the place. Check your travel books, I always use Fodor's or Frommer's or better yet, ask the hotel staff, they have yet to steer me wrong!
2) Enjoy Your Meal
Ok, I admit it, I'm a foodie, so food really matters to me, and I am fortunate to live in a part of the world where it is plenty and easy to access. The French REALLY enjoy their food. The don't count calories or worry about their hips, they just enjoy all things, but in moderation. I love the fact that a restaurant meal is a few courses and takes a couple of hours, and you're not harassed by the wait staff to get out so they can turn the table over. Some of the best meals I've ever had, have been in France, and I think the fact I was allowed to eat slowly and savour it, is why!
3) Don't Forget To Say Hello and Goodbye
Manners, manners, manners. It's nice to be greeted when you enter and exit a store, it's such a simple gesture, but it makes a world of difference and makes you feel as a consumer that you're appreciated.
4) Paris Style
This is probably something that really stands out in Europe. People wouldn't dare think of leaving the house in their PJ's or track pants. The French make a great effort in their appearance, so when they leave the front door-they look good, and I really like that, I think it's nice to see people care about how they look, because it makes you care about how you look to.
5) The History
You can't go down a street in Paris where something historical hasn't happened. I love walking down the cobble stoned streets and stone buildings, most of Europe is like this, and I think it's what makes it so charming. It also helps that Paris has some of the most beautiful and historic artwork, churches and buildings all within subway and walking distance from each other.
