Hours on the beach have you looking tanned, healthy and summery, but how's your hair.  If you've been noticing more bad hair days than good-blame it on the beach!  There are several culprits which wreck havoc on your hair and lead to the dreaded bad hair day.  Here is an overview of what contributes the most damage to your hair on those beachy, sunny days:

UV A and B Rays

Tanned skin, means tanned hair, but if your not careful it can become crispy.  If you don't cover up, your hair can become dry and damaged, as worst of all porous.  Porous, means frizzy, since your hair will absorb any water it can to moisturize it.  Other damage UV can do? For those of you who color your hair, be prepared to notice fading of your color, not to mention dried out hair leading to split ends and easily broken straw like hair.

The solution?

-Cover up, wear a hat or scarf in your hair to block UV, when your in the pool try a bath cap

-Use products with sunscreen in them (shampoo/conditioner/color treatments) that will block UV like Kerastase Soleil Line (www.kerastase.com)

Salt Water and Chlorine

Whether it's salt, fresh or pool water, they all do the same thing-dry your hair out!  The salt is salt water tends to settle in your hair (especially porous, damaged hair), attracting water so your hair is frizzy, but weighing it down so it looks dull.  Salt also blocks the absorption of any treatments you may use, making your problem seem even worse!!  Similarly, fresh water has minerals which coat your hair leading to the same problems.  Chlorine not only dries you hair out, but it can discolor your hair in devastating ways (I'm sure the blondes out there can attest to this fact!).

The solution?

-Rinse your hair with clean water before (to seal the hair cuticle) and after going in pools, fresh/salt water

-Use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners for dry hair, and smoothing shampoos for frizzed out, brittle hair like Shu Uemura's Moisture Velvet Line for Dry Hair (www.shuuemura.com)

-For dull, flat hair due to builidup, consider a clarfiying shampoo to reduce like Pantene's Clarifying Shampoo (www.pantene.com)

-Trim split ends every 3-4 weeks

Sand

Sand can be pretty abrasive to hair, it settles on the scalp works it's way down chipping and breaking down the hair shaft leading to weakened, thinning hair, which is hard to style.  For color treated hair, it wears away the color particles and causes fading.

The solution?

-keep sand out of your hair by covering up with a hat/scarf/bath cap

-washout your hair after lying in the sand and consider using a fortifying shampoo to strengthen your hair like Shu Uemura's Silk Bloom Line for Damaged Hair (www.shuuemura.com)
