Now that you know what to look for in a good sunscreen, the next question is-how do you properly use it.  Here are some pointers on proper sunscreen use:

1)How much to use:

The main problem with sunscreen use, is that most persons don't apply enough!  Ideally you should use 1 ounce (or 1 shot glass), to cover all parts of your exposed body, and a pea size amount for your face.  Be sure to rub it in well.

2)When do you put it on:

Ideally half hour before going outdoors, chemical sunscreens (that absorb the UV) take 20 minutes to be absorbed through the skin, this way your giving yourself time to do so

3)How often do you reapply:

Reapply every 2 hours or as needed.  There are some conditions that would alter the effectiveness of sunscreen, such as

-sweating

-water exposure

-high humidity environment

-drying/rubbing towel on skin

-how intense the UV is-if your near the equator, UV is more intense

-time of day-between 10am to 4pm the sun's rays are strongest, so adjust accordingly

-skin type-fairer skin burns faster

-type of sunscreen used (non water/sweat resistant vs resistant)

In these situations you should reapply a little sooner than every 2 hours.

Note:All dermatologists agree that there is no such thing as an ALL DAY sunscreen, all lose effectiveness over a few hours, so please be sure to reapply!!

4)How long can you use the same bottle:

If your sunscreen doesn't indicate an expiration date, keep in mind that most sunscreens keep their strength and are stable for 3 years, if your bottle is older than that get a new one!  However, if your using your sunscreen properly you'll be getting through those bottles in no time!!!
